Searching Memory
May, 2006
Even though a memory can never be recalled in exactly the same way as the moment it happened, we can still feel many intense 'fragments' of these moments through our sensitivities. Recovering a lost memory becomes a similar activity to the exploration and excavation of an ancient field. By digging, collecting, and filtering, we try to re-grasp many of these fragments, the air, smells, colours and feelings of forgotten memories in the flowing stream of time. I wanted to represent such an activity, its fragility and instability. A block of cement simulated a process of remembering. I broke this block of cement into pieces, sieving the fragments with different grades of net to separate and collect different sized pieces, until I reached dust. I then poured these particles over a piece of paper, leaving their trace across its surface. This work became a base of an installation "Sequence 1" which I made on March 2007.
